🌫️ Day 7 — Nessie Whispers & Highland Tempests
“Storms outside, steady hearts within.”
Morning broke in gold and mist — a spectacular sunrise during our forest-side breakfast. Before the train, we explored the other side of the village: wide, wild golf fields and a riverside path where cows looked up as we waved hello.
Then came a message that froze my heart — our ferry to Orkney might be cancelled because of an approaching storm. The sky dimmed a little, but hope stayed afloat.
Our train arrived eight minutes late, but the view made up for everything: glens and lochs rolling past, the very tracks where the Hogwarts Express once steamed through the clouds.
Inverness greeted us with wind and promise. We dropped our bags at our new home, the Ness View Apartment — after a comical battle with the lock! Our host popped by to check on the brand-new bathtub (fate smiling again: a bath tonight!).
Then — Ness River, here we come!
We ran along the banks under clouds thick with mystery, heading for the legendary Loch Ness. The fog turned the water silver, and somewhere in that shifting mist, Nessie stirred — or maybe it was just our reflections grinning back.
We jumped off at Urquhart Castle, its ruins perched over the loch like a secret from the 6th century. There, I discovered a new favourite potion: whiskey hot chocolate 🥵. Between the warmth, the wind, and the spell of the scenery, I moved in a dream — sometimes too slow, sometimes too fast, heart racing with magic and caffeine.
Then disaster: after a quick toilet break, we lost each other! No signal, no clue. Panic rose — until a voicemail from Charlie broke through. Found. Saved. But oh — a storm of emotions followed.
The sun returned like an apology. We made peace on the climb to Inverness Castle, the city glowing below like a Highland jewel. For a moment, everything was still.
Then the real storm came. By the time we reached our “top-rated” restaurant, the wind was roaring, the rain unrelenting. Charlie was exhausted and grumpy; dinner was a flop. But we held hands through it all, laughing between gusts, trying not to blow away on the walk back to our Ness-side nest.
That night, the wind howled like an orchestra outside. We curled up, watched The Addams Family, and let the storm play its gothic symphony.
A spooky, cozy night — perfectly us. 💋🌧️
